Nine Tips for New School Leaders

edwards
I recently visited West Tallahatchie School District in Webb, Mississippi. I asked the new Superintendent, Darron Edwards, who has been on the job for just seven months, what advice he has for new superintendents to be successful. Here is what Dr. Edwards shared with me:
  • Be strategic
  • Pace yourself – do not do everything at once
  • Build trust
  • Frequently engage with a mentor
  • Ensure open communications
  • Take a team approach
  • Understand the community’s culture
  • Be transparent
  • Set, share and model high expectations
Dr. Edwards’ advice is clearly relevant and valuable for new district leaders. It is just as applicable to school leaders, teachers, staff and school partners. We all need to be strategic, pace ourselves, build trust, communicate openly, work well in teams, understand our cultures, act transparently and model high expectations. Good advice indeed.
