We will not stop until: it’s all about relationships

Image: We Won't Stop Until...
My colleague Dr. Shelly Berman, superintendent Jefferson County Public Schools (KY), co-created a wonderful document expressing what the district considers indicators of success. Click here to grab the PDF.

My colleagues and I use this document in various professional development sessions as an initial activity; where we ask each participant to select one of the statements and introduce themselves by expressing why they chose that particular statement.

This week, we used this exercise in Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Administrator’s Academy, Over 20 district and school leaders came together in Madison, Wisconsin to increase their youth engagement knowledge and skills.

Regardless of the statement chosen by the participants, each expressed that their statement required relationship building. The collective insight was that achieving the desired goals and outcomes for students, schools and communities requires an intentional focus on relationship building.

The lesson I take from the activity is that quality education requires developing and sustaining sets of relationships that create effective school climates and equitable teaching and learning opportunities for all education stakeholders. Schools should not only provide opportunities for students to acquire and enhance relationship-building skills but also model positive relationships and their positive impact on student achievement and success.

Developing and sustaining quality adult-adult relationships sets the stage for cultivating relationships with students. Positive relationships in the school environment directly correlate to greater opportunities to achieve the competencies and attributes included in the We Wont’ Stop Until statements.
